ICT: Definition, Types and Its Role in Developing 21st Century Skills


WHAT IS ICT?

ICT stands for "Information and Communications Technology". It refers to a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to transmit, store, create, share or exchange information. It includes computers, the Internet (websites, blogs, and emails), live broadcasting technologies (radio, television, and webcasting), recorded broadcasting technologies (podcasting, audio, and video players, and storage devices), and telephony (fixed or mobile, satellite, Visio/video-conferencing, etc.). In modern society, ICT has become one of the fundamental building blocks as its presence helps individuals, businesses and organizations use information.

 

TYPES OF ICT

As claimed by Luo and Lei (2012), ICT may be mobile, educational network, web-based, or classroom equipment.

Role of ICT in Developing

21st Century Skills

ICT integration particularly in classroom instruction has been put part of the curriculum as it has been considered a crucial key and means to enhance teaching and learning. Utilizing ICT tools and resources in education helps teachers to be more effective and students to enhance their knowledge and develop skills, particularly the learning skills (4Cs) - Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Creativity; literacy skills (IMT) - Information literacy, Media literacy and Technology literacy; and life skills (FLIPS) - Flexibility, Leadership, Initiative, Productivity and Social skills of the 21st-century skills.
